![]() ![]() Mum helen was the music teacher at alawa Primary school, I remember going to the rendevouz greek restaurant every friday night ran by john friendly greek bloke, later years it was the Rama run by Vicki and Dave Palmer (he was an ex-cop?)Charlie Cagnettis was a great restaurant,Veal Scallopinni.my mum had mad friends, John Spellman,Peter Morgan, Phyllis (Telstra lady),Johnny faithful local mad entertainer, us kids would hang out at the pancake palace and help in the kitchen,my mum had funky furniture shops in the 70,s one in Cavenagh street and one in parap, We used to go down to mindil beach and my parents would party with all the hippies, also there used to be a bunch living just at the entrance of berry springs pools. Yes remember most of these things, we came here in 1967, my dad john was a bricklayer, then soon a blocklayer, he built half of this town with the greeks I reckon. After 60 years in Darwin it is nice to sit back and remember earlier days when life was lived at a slower pace. But is it better? Change is inevitable and a lot of the change is for the better. Were you a student at Darwin Primary School at Frog's Hollow in 1956 or 57 when the steam engine was placed in the playground to play on? Do you remember Quong's Bakery and the DX Bakery? How about the remains of the Vesty's Meat Works? Did you ever watch a western at the Star Theatre on a Wednesday night? Ever try the fish and chips bought through a small window in the Vic Hotel courtyard? Do you remember seeing the wreck of the Neptuna on low tide on it's side near Stokes Hill wharf? Who saw the chimp from the Tarzan films do back flips on the deck of the yacht Sea Fox?ĭairy Queen arrived and changed the eating habits of a generation. ![]()
